You think to yourself ‘truck drivers make good money, they get to go all the time, see different parts of the US and Canada, they don’t have any responsibilities and all they must do is sit and drive. I might actually like a position like this. ‘ So in your free time after work or on weekends you choose to take a lorry driving course.
You go to truck driving schools to get your CDL license and then choose to buy a tractor and trailer thinking your going to become wealthy our there on the road. You’ll be free from the daily drudgery and the same ole hum drum way you once lived. By this time you are all excited, you’ve a pretty new wagon, a trailer of your own and you are your own proprietor who is leased onto a firm. But to several new wagon drivers fact sets in real fast as shortly as they get out on their first long haul, The dispatchers are non to friendly, the pay is not as good as they told you, the sound of the corporations benefits and the way things are ran isn’t the real truth regarding the fact of things, your dispatcher makes an appointment time from your origin to destination that is virtually impossible and you have got to drive all day 24×7. The one time you get out of the wagon is by using the lavatory at a wagon stop, grab a bite to eat and sleep. But you’ve got to keep going to meet the delivery deadline.
Now you get to your destination, you have documentation all the time to do, which you are your own secretary, nobody can do it for you, you want to stay alongside of your log book and follow DOT regulations for in a way they’re your director. You get to your destination or place of delivery and you have got to wait, some shippers will make you wait for hours at a time and then some will take you straight away. In the mean time you are on the telephone with your dispatcher asking for another load. She’s unable to find you one so you continue to are waiting to be unloaded. Ultimately a pair hours later you are ultimately unloaded, ‘ok no problem you suspect.
Lots of time wasted, but no problem. ‘ it did not happen to you that all the time you were sat at the docks you weren’t being paid or making any cash. You did not get to have breakfast or lunch because your time was getting short and you wished to be at the receivers on time for your appointment. You call your dispatcher again. Your put on hold and then you wait and wait and wait till ultimately your dispatcher gets on the telephone. She / he’s sending you to Manhattan 2100 miles away. But you have to pick up 150 miles away from were your delivering to. You leave the receivers and drive down the line, you call your dispatcher back for directions and all she gives you is a telephone number for you to call for directions.
When you get a block or 2 away from the street you are supposed to pick up at you pull over and call the telephone number your dispatcher gives you and get directions into your next origin. You get put on hold again and you are parked on the side of the road. There are no parking lots out there for gigantic rigs. Eventually somebody in shipping answers, they give you directions into the shippers and hang up on you while you are still on the telephone. You get to your origin to pick up this load which takes an hour and a half to load and keep going ; you call your dispatcher back and get put on hold again. Eventually she / he answers and you ask when the load is to be in N. Y. They answer ‘in 2 and a half days. ‘ You think about it 2 and a half days when am I going to get a little sleep. I only had 4 hours yesterday evening and I have to drive for another two and a half days? When am I going to be ready to grab a shower or get time off? Since you were used to showering each morning when you worked for your last boos in that nice plush office setting. Little do you realize that trucking was this way and there’s no turning back now, your lorry has custody of you and your its slave, you have got to do what this industry tells you to do due to that van payment, trailer payment, insurance, authorizes, and your other trucking costs that associate with being on the road, not to mention your home costs too.
Fri. comes around its pay day the high point of your week. You call your other half and ask how much your check was, they tell you that your check was it $500.00. Wow your use to making at least $800.00 a week in you old office setting. ‘Not much money you think to yourself. ‘ So you keep driving down the line, keeping up your forms, handling what is referred to as a pickle park or a weight scale and the DOT, traffic etc which is now making not only you knackered but stressed. You come to notice that this could be an on going thing for the remainder of your life, the harder you work and the more miles you drive you are not about to make the same living as you probably did in that nice office you once had a couple of weeks back. On top of this you’ve more money going out and the pay smells, you’ve no time for yourself at all, you are missing out on family get togethers, missing your folks and better half and so on. This new truckers of this industry is the actuality of lorry drivers to the tee. Do you believe that you can handle it? Wagon driving isn’t glamorous and you are not going to become wealthy in that piece of steel.
The hours are hard and long and you don’t get much rest.
You are thrashing that pavement to make somebody else rich who doesn’t care about y one thousand ou but themselves. So to those who believe a trucker has a great life please think again after reading this.
