This is quite accurate on many levels. The saying is that “where the highway stops is where you will start” and many drivers agree that pretty much describes the job. It can be tough, dirty and rough, but you are out there building the world in places where people don’t usually go and helping to make something special.
Most of the drivers agree that you should start with a smaller truck trailer tractor, perhaps what is categorized as LR (Light Rigid) or MR (Medium Rigid). Gain experience, improve your driving skills and maintain a clean driving record. When you think you are ready to drive dump truck trailers, then obtain your HR (Heavy Rigid) drivers license and start driving.
Once you have obtained your HR license you are then capable of driving the biggest trucks there are like the ones in mining business if you apply for mining truck jobs. Those that have 3 or more axles, which is a description of a dump truck semi trailer tractor; the big boy. Since many of these drivers starting school for dump trucking have a little more experience than the average truck driver, most schools will try to tailor a training program to their specific needs.
Some of the HR licenses do have restrictions, or conditions. Condition A means that you are only allowed to drive an automatic transmission, which is pretty rare on the older dump truck trailers. Condition B means you can drive an automatic, with what is called synchromesh gears, which is similar to a manual transmission. Then there is HR Unrestricted, which of course means you can drive any and all combinations of heavy vehicles.
Most of the employers will of course prefer the HR Unrestricted license and that also opens more lucrative employment opportunities in dump trucking, so most drivers will go for that license.
Many employers are reluctant to hire a dump truck trailer driver with little or no experience. By going through a school and gaining some hands-on experience, it tends to give the drivers more credibility. Often, this will make a prospective employer at least consider them for a position once they have completed the school training.
