How Do You Become A Dump Truck Driver

Are you looking to become a dump truck driver? Dump truck drivers are unique within the trucking industry and certainly it is going to be much easier for you to become one if you already have a regular auto license. In most cases any dump truck driver is going to work on a local basis and the job will simply involve driving to and from a local job site. It is very rare to find any dump truck driving on the highway and in general these types of drivers will work for construction companies or trucking companies specifically.

In order to work as one of these drivers there are several steps that need to take. First of these will be to go to truck driving school. You need to take a CDL Class A or Class B depending upon the type of dump truck you are going to be driving.

If you want to drive in typical dump truck then the first Class A exam will need to be passed. If, however, you are planning to drive a semi truck that has a dump trailer attached to it then you class B exam will need to be passed.

Once you have passed the exam you should then go out and buy yourself a dump truck. You can then rend out your services along with your truck to a construction company and, essentially, work as a self-employed freelance driver. Through his work you will be able to gradually earn back the expense of purchasing your vehicle in the first place and will be able to make a healthy living as a freelancer.

If you don’t want to purchase a truck yourself and work as a freelancer then there are other ways of finding dump truck driving jobs. One of these would simply be to spend some time looking through the classified adverts in the newspaper listings, or to do the same online. Go to specific construction websites or on the construction section on job listing websites and see if there are any available listings for you.

If you can’t find anything suitable then you may want to take further action. One example of this would be to sign up to some forums and to advertise your services there. Furthermore, you can actually take out an advert and list this in the newspapers or on different websites where potential employers may be looking for your services. Always be sure to be very specific about the type of truck driving job you are advertising.

You can also look in the phone book and find as many trucking and construction companies in your local area as possible. Take down their numbers and then call them directly. Find out if they are actually hiring any dump truck drivers at this current time.

If they are not then to make sure that they hang onto your details. If any potential jobs or up in the future then they will have your details on file and can get directly in touch with you.

Dump truck training is offered by multiple driving schools all over the country, and often by employers as well, particularly if they are having difficulty finding suitable numbers of drivers themselves. Typically employers do find a fairly tricky to find drivers who have the right qualifications, most commonly a class A commercial drivers license. This particular class qualifies any driver to drive a semi-trailer truck which are often used as dump trucks for various different types of operation.

The cost of the training that you go through any of these driving school will certainly vary. Class A driving will usually run up to several thousand dollars, while class B can potentially be less than $1000 depending on the school. For new employees many different companies will offer some form of reimbursement, if only partial.

If you are interested in going to any of these driving schools in order to get dump truck driver jobs then it is certainly a good idea for you to shop around for costings. The fees that you have to pay will certainly vary, often significantly, depending on the training schools that you go to and therefore it is certainly worth spending a bit of time shopping around and looking for the best options.

A class A commercial drivers license will usually involve roughly 160 hours of training, but this can be anything up to 200 hours depending on the school. Usually roughly 50 hours of this training will be spent in the classroom and the rest of it will be spent out on the road on the training lot getting practical experience.

Class B training, on the other hand, will usually only last up to 50 hours maximum, but this can be a lot less depending upon the current level of skill and experience. In addition to the classroom work this will usually involve 4 days of hands-on training as well.

There are many different features of the training that you go through. Every aspect of being a truck driver will be covered, from practicing loading, securing, transportation, and then unloading. If you are a new driver then you will also learn about any inspections that you should conduct before getting out on the road. In addition, you will also learn about all aspects of actually driving the truck concerning turning, braking, and backing.

There is also additional training courses offered to those who already have a great deal of experience within this particular field. If you are a heavy equipment operator then you can go on further training courses that will help to increase your employability and value to any potential company.

All in all, anyone who wants to become a dump truck driver will need to spend some time figuring out their options. This is the first stage of the plan and once they have their commercial drivers license they will then be able to apply for various different opportunities with trucking and construction companies. Spend some time looking around for some courses in the area and always consider the prices on offer.

You decided that it is time to change your job and are interested in dump truck driving. The usual description of dump truck driving jobs is that they are dirty and it’s tough.

Is Dump Trucking The Right Career Choice

Is Dump Trucking The Right Career Choice Photo by DioMakr via Flickr

This is quite accurate on many levels. The saying is that “where the highway stops is where you will start” and many drivers agree that pretty much describes the job. It can be tough, dirty and rough, but you are out there building the world in places where people don’t usually go and helping to make something special.

Most of the drivers agree that you should start with a smaller truck trailer tractor, perhaps what is categorized as LR (Light Rigid) or MR (Medium Rigid). Gain experience, improve your driving skills and maintain a clean driving record. When you think you are ready to drive dump truck trailers, then obtain your HR (Heavy Rigid) drivers license and start driving.

Once you have obtained your HR license you are then capable of driving the biggest trucks there are like the ones in mining business if you apply for mining truck jobs. Those that have 3 or more axles, which is a description of a dump truck semi trailer tractor; the big boy. Since many of these drivers starting school for dump trucking have a little more experience than the average truck driver, most schools will try to tailor a training program to their specific needs.

Some of the HR licenses do have restrictions, or conditions. Condition A means that you are only allowed to drive an automatic transmission, which is pretty rare on the older dump truck trailers. Condition B means you can drive an automatic, with what is called synchromesh gears, which is similar to a manual transmission. Then there is HR Unrestricted, which of course means you can drive any and all combinations of heavy vehicles.

Most of the employers will of course prefer the HR Unrestricted license and that also opens more lucrative employment opportunities in dump trucking, so most drivers will go for that license.

Many employers are reluctant to hire a dump truck trailer driver with little or no experience. By going through a school and gaining some hands-on experience, it tends to give the drivers more credibility. Often, this will make a prospective employer at least consider them for a position once they have completed the school training.

One of the largest road vehicles today are dump trucks which are commonly used in the mining industry. For that reason dump truck driving jobs are becoming more widely available.

Mining Truck Jobs

These enormous dump trucks are used to carry ore, debris, wreckage etc within the mines from one place to another.

They prove to be worthwhile not only in the mining industry but also in the construction business, sanitation companies and many more.

The CAT 797 dump truck model is impressive large machinery and the most common in fact. The CAT 797 dump truck is roughly 7 meters high and has a capacity of 345 tones.

Being a massive piece of metal, it is often thought of as a complex machine, but on the contrary they are pretty easy to operate. This makes it even more of a lucrative job as being relatively simple to operate and offering a high pay scale, people from all the ages are attracted towards the job.

The last possible restriction that could have hindered the growth is also removed as there is no age or gender limitation. Even if you don’t have a prior experience in the driving career, you can find a dump truck driving position without too many glitches.

It’s demand has grown especially due to the media lately showing people earning around 100,000 dollars a year and only working 2 thirds of the year. The male dominance over the job is also starting to crumble as this being a less physical and more mental job.

Firms are now recruiting more women as they are supposed to be gentle and handle the large and costly machinery with care. This in turn proves to be beneficial for the companies as this reduces the repair costs. This is even more supported by the better safety record shown by the women in comparison to males.

The only difficult task in the dump truck mining jobs is the working hours. Dump truck driver normally works 12 hours a day and 13 days in a row. In most of the mining companies rosters are followed and it depends on which company you land into.

The common one is 9 days on and 5 days off which not only proves beneficial for the firm but the employees also especially who fly in and fly out.

But with all the odds the even is you are out of the ruthless weather that the Australia offers which sometimes reach 55 degrees during the hottest days of the hot summers, although most trucks are fully air-conditioned. These jobs have become a popular entry level employment route in the industry.

Dump truck driving jobs are becoming more and more popular means of employment in the mining industry.

Dump Truck Driver

Individuals seeking this popular profession will find the majority of available work in Western Australia. This particular region will continue to extract iron ore, at a rapid pace, to supply the constant need of China. Training in this field is a lucrative career choice and normally offers a yearly income which averages amounts upward of 151,488 AUD ($100,000 US).

Motivation to work in the field is not solely monetary. The ability to learn a trade and become marketable, in a few short years, is another positive factor. To be qualified for dump truck jobs, in the mining industry, one must first obtain an MR license. This particular license classifies prospective employees as having the ability to drive rigid trucks with 3 axels.

An MR license requires passing a special exam. A number of special driving schools, throughout Australia, can assist individuals with test preparation. This particular duty, in mining, has become quite popular, because driving the large trucks parallels driving smaller machinery and is learnable, in a short period of time. Typically, mining companies prefer that individuals have at least 1 year or more of experience.

Normally such positions are fly in and fly out. Employees fly in for an extended period before taking a break and flying home, for a period of days off, before repeating the cycle again. Typically employees, hired for dump truck jobs, work a roster of 8 days on and 6 days off.

Other mining companies might hire employees to work a roster of 2 weeks on and 1 week off. Shifts are typically 12 hours with continuous work going on, in the mine, 24 hours per day 7 days a week. Rosters and hours are all dependent on the mining company with no two companies the same.

Individuals hired for dump truck jobs follow the direction of a supervisor directing loads into and out of the pit mine. Employees work alone in large mining trucks, like the CAT 793 but must have the ability to work as a team with other employees. Mining activity works in coordinated activity, and one must be willing to be a team player, to make such a large scale operation a success. Dump truck jobs are also repetitive and constant which are two factors, for which employees. should be adequately prepared.

Dump trucks driven in a mining environment are typically a CAT 793. Trucks are typically monstrous pieces of machinery which drive into and out of mining areas. Manufactured by Caterpillar, the 793 is “the world’s largest truck with a “240 ton capacity.”

Dump truck jobs require drivers to climb a ladder and get inside the cab which is about 18 feet tall (about 5580 mm), at the top of the cab. The actual loading compartment is over 19 feet (about 5870 mm) in height. A cab inside the truck, where the truck is driven, looks much like the interior of a regular truck that drives down the road.

If you are looking for career change then dump truck driving jobs might be the answer. Or maybe you would like to open your own dump truck business. In any case, here are some useful tips you can follow.

Dump Truck Financing

Dump Truck Financing Photo by Mavis via Flickr

One way is to look for smaller independent dealers. They may be willing to carry their own paper; meaning they will offer you dump truck financing instead of a bank. You will make your monthly payments directly to them. You may have established a relationship with them while shopping or buying a previous truck from them.

This may give them a comfort level about your character and ability to repay them. What about the person you will be working for? They may vouch for you and that may give the dealer the incentive to work around your credit problems. These may be unique scenarios but they do exist.

Maybe you’re currently renting a truck from a rental company. They may be willing to offer dump truck financing based on your good pay history. Your timely payments may have increased your creditability and made them comfortable loaning you the money. They may even put some of your rental payments towards the sales price. This is more common than you think.

Of course there is always a co-signer. Most lending institutions will finance you if you provide a good strong co-signer. This could be a parent, relative or a good friend willing to put his or her name on the documents with you.

And if you are looking for dump truck rentals there are companies that get around bad credit by taking additional collateral to secure the loan. If you have another truck that is free and clear, or own real estate that has equity you may be able to get around your bad credit issues.

The company will determine how much you will be approved for based on the amount of equity in your real estate or the market value of the additional collateral you are pledging. Most of these companies have a specific niche they specialize in. These collateral based lenders, who specialize in dump truck financing, semi truck financing and any other heavy equipment financing are a great alternative for people with less than perfect credit.

If you are looking for dump truck driving jobs? Or maybe you are opening a new dump truck business and do not have a financial capability to buy a new truck? Then the best solution is dump truck rental.

Looking For Dump Truck Rentals

Looking For Dump Truck Rentals Photo by Kecko via Flickr

When there is a large construction or renovation project going on, dump truck rentals can provide the perfect way to deliver materials to the site or take care of the waste and transport it to the dump. Most people do not have the need to purchase such a truck, which is why truck rental services have proved extremely cost-effective for this type of work.

When you are looking to find your dump truck provider you should consider the size and load capacity of truck you’re going to need.

It’s important to think about this carefully, as a larger truck means you will be paying more in hiring fees. In many cases it will make sense to make more than one trip, in which case a smaller truck would be perfect. You should also take time to work out your budget and how long you will need the truck for.

You are also required to make sure that a qualified driver drives the dump truck. Because it is considered to be heavy machinery, you will need to have the relevant type of driving license in order to be able to rent this kind of truck. If you don’t have this already, the truck rental company may be able to provide you with a driver. The simplest way is to advertise that you have a truck driving jobs available.

Once you are prepared for what you need then you can contact a number of rental services to get a quote. They may offer different prices and different terms when it comes to picking up your truck and dropping it off when you’re finished. It is a good idea to compare the costs of a few different dump truck rentals to get the best deal.

Whether you’re a solo driver working short regional routes, or part of a driving team of dump truck drivers, dump truck driving jobs can give you everything you want out of life.

Truck Driving Jobs AvailableTeam drivers are always in high demand and many companies will take on team drivers much more readily than solo drivers. Drivers who own their own rigs are called owner/operators and are always in demand by trucking companies because it means that they don’t have to supply them with a truck to drive.

You can find lots of work driving trucks by searching through the classified ads under transportation or the best truck driving jobs. Many of the truck driving training schools also have a long list of companies looking for qualified recent graduates which can mean that you’ll have a job as soon as you graduate from your course.

This can take a lot of worry out of searching for work after you’ve spent a lot of time and money getting your credentials. The internet is also a great place to look for trucking jobs, with many web sites specializing in nothing but regional and national trucking jobs. Word of mouth is also another great way to find work if you know of anyone who’s working in the industry and likes what they do. Some of the best job opportunities are found by simply being in the right place at the right time.

Some transport companies specialize in managing the short regional trucking delivery routes. This means that when a business wants something trucked from one local area to another, local short-haul delivery drivers handle the work. The vehicle can be anything from a small delivery truck to a longer-bodied delivery truck of up to 26 feet.

This sort of trucking job requires far less driving experience than long-haul trucking jobs and is an excellent way for new drivers to learn the ropes. From here it’s an easy progression to step up to the longer routes and eventually going through extra training and learning enough to handle the big rigs on longer routes across the country. Once you have your commercial driver’s license – or CDL – you can begin to learn about the different ways that you can have long-haul trucking driving jobs in this industry.

But maybe you’ve always wanted to work on construction sites. Well, driving a dump truck can give you the opportunity to work closely with other members of this trade. When you learn how to drive a dump truck you can also see about getting your own truck and hiring yourself out as a freelance driver on many different projects around your area.

This means being able to keep a larger share of the fees you charge, though you will also be responsible for the cost of maintaining your truck yourself. Dump truck drivers regularly make as much as $19.00 an hour with time spent almost solely driving a truck back and forth with a load to dump. But maybe driving a tow truck is more to your liking.

When people are in need of someone to tow their vehicle when it breaks down, the tow truck driver is someone they’re always happy to see. Tow truck drivers working for someone else can expect to make anywhere from $12.00 to $16.00 an hour, though owner/operators of a tow truck can charge anywhere from $75.00 to $150.00 per tow, plus additional fees for extra mileage over a set rate.

One thing to be sure you pay attention to is the ratio of home time to work time with many of these truck driving positions. The better paying long-haul driving jobs generally have the least amount of home time due to the distances involved. The more regional and local trucking jobs provide more at-home time, but will also pay far less than the big money long-haul driving jobs.
